Nigüelas

Attractively
set at the head of the Lecrin Valley and with the dramatic Sierra Nevada
as its backdrop and only twenty minutes from Granada, Nigüelas is ideally
situated to enable visitors to enjoy the rich variety of countryside and
city activities in this lovely part of southern Spain.
The village itself is typical Andalucian - pretty white-washed houses in narrow streets - but has not been affected by tourism and is still very Spanish in nature. It is a tranquil but thriving village, carefully tended and maintained by its Ayuntamiento (Town Hall). The Town Hall itself is a lovely historic building set in pretty gardens that can be visited. There are three small supermarkets in the village, two bakeries, a pharmacy, a part-time bank and a small weekly market. The bars are small and often lively, typically Spanish places. This is one of the few areas in Spain where the custom of providing a free tapa with each drink remains the norm. So with each round of drinks you will be presented with a plate of food - possibly local cured ham, home-made potato omelette (tortilla), prawns, tuna salad, pork loin cooked with garlic - whatever the kitchen is cooking that day. You will get a different tapa every time you buy a drink. This makes for an interesting, and very economical, evening out! There is a lovely restaurant in a beautifully restored mill just outside the village and a variety of other restaurants and bars in the local area. There are also plenty of opportunities
for walking off some of that food! Several walks - from gentle strolls
to the next village, to more ambitious treks into the Sierra are accessible
directly from the village. A section of the GR7 cross-European route
cuts through the village and up towards the Alpujarras beyond. |
